    Handyman Visit

    $345

Up to two hours of general repairs. Send the whole list, not just the worst item.

    • A door that drags, a dripping faucet, two drywall patches, a TV on the wall
    • Most small lists are finished in the one trip
    • Tools, ladder, common parts, and cleanup come with it
    • Specialty installs get their own quoted price, agreed first

    When the list is long

    Half Day & Full Day

    $595

half day · $1,095 full day

A floor of doors, a room of drywall, every fixture in a new house, or the backlog from the last owner. Same rule: one price, agreed first.

    • Half Day: up to four hours on site
    • Full Day: a full working day, the entire backlog
    • Multi-day jobs (backsplash, sheds, deck resurfacing): one written price, half down to hold the date

    What We Fix

A Princeton Handyman for the Small Stuff

Nine kinds of repair, each with its own page. Mix items from several of them in one trip; the price covers the whole list.

    Longer Jobs

More than a day, priced once.

You get a single written figure. Fifty percent reserves the start date; the balance is paid when the work is complete.

    Outside Our Lane

    Four things we send elsewhere.

    • Work inside walls. Running new pipe or wire, adding circuits or outlets, panels. Those need a permit and a licensed plumber or electrician.
    • Gas, heating, cooling, water heaters. All licensed trades. We will say so up front rather than after you have bought the part.
    • Remodels. Gutting a bathroom or kitchen, converting a tub to a shower. Small bathroom fixes, yes. Renovations, no.
    • Roofing and gutter cleaning. Different crews with different ladders. We are glad to suggest who to call.

Source: U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates, via censusreporter.org. Place facts: Wikipedia articles on Princeton and on Mercer County, New Jersey.

Mercer County was carved out of Burlington, Hunterdon, and Middlesex counties in 1838 and named for General Hugh Mercer, who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Princeton in January 1777. Trenton is the county seat, and the county has only 12 municipalities, the fewest of any in New Jersey. Princeton is the home of Princeton University, founded in 1746 as the College of New Jersey, and of Drumthwacket, the governor's official residence.

The table shows why so much of our work here is fitting new parts to old houses. Princeton and the county both have roughly two in three homes built before 1980, but Princeton leans further toward the oldest stock, and its homes run larger, with more rooms to keep up. A census figure can't diagnose any single house. What it does suggest is a likely mix: original doors and trim that have shifted over decades, painted surfaces old enough for the federal lead rule to matter, and, in the newer fifth of the stock, first-generation fixtures and caulk coming due.

Princeton also has a hot-summer humid continental climate, and the county sits in hardiness zones 6b and 7a. Seasonal swings like that tend to show up as doors that bind in humid months and exterior wood that needs attention after winter, though every house behaves a little differently. For the details on individual towns, see Princeton, Lawrence Township, West Windsor, Robbinsville, and East Windsor.

    The Rules We Work Under

Permits, Lead Paint, Contracts, and Cost

    When no permit is needed

The state construction code lists "ordinary maintenance" at N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7. In a one- or two-family home, that list covers painting, wallpaper, patching drywall or plaster on less than a quarter of a wall, new trim, new flooring material, replacement window glass, a door or window swapped into the same opening, cabinets and bathroom accessories, screens, gutters, non-structural deck and porch repairs in like materials, and exchanging a faucet, trap, light fixture, switch, or receptacle for a similar one.

Our repair menu is built around that list. Moving a wall, extending a pipe, or adding a circuit goes to your town's construction office for a permit, and to a contractor or licensed trade who will pull it.

    Paint older than 1978

The EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule (40 CFR 745) applies to housing built before 1978. If a job disturbs more than 6 square feet of painted surface in a room, or more than 20 square feet on the outside, the rule calls for lead-safe work practices carried out by an EPA-certified firm.

Tell us the year your house was built when you send photos. Swapping a hinge or a light fixture is far below those figures; stripping a door or opening a wall may not be, and we flag that before booking.

Jobs over $500 are in writing

Under the Contractors' Registration Act (N.J.S.A. 56:8-136 and following, with contract terms at 56:8-151) and N.J.A.C. 13:45A-16.2, a home improvement contract above $500 has to be written and signed, with start and finish dates, the total price, and the contractor's registration number.

Ours is NJ HIC #13VH13918800. After you sign, you have three business days to cancel.

Our packages against the national figures

A Visit costs $345 and covers up to two hours. A Half Day is $595 for up to four, and a Full Day is $1,095 for up to eight. A list priced item by item runs at $175 an hour, but the total stops at the price of the package it fits inside. Parts and materials are listed on the same quote before you agree to anything.

HomeGuide's handyman price guide (August 2023) gives the national ranges at right. They are U.S. averages, not New Jersey quotes, and an hourly rate leaves the final bill open where a package does not. For a single wall repair, HomeGuide's drywall guide (October 2025) has a hole under 4 inches at $300-$500; our drywall repair page shows what fits in a Visit.

    Questions

    Short Answers

What does a handyman cost in Princeton with you?

A Visit is $345 for up to 2 hours of work, a Half Day is $595 for up to 4 hours, and a Full Day is $1,095 for up to 8 hours. Itemized jobs are $175 an hour, capped at the package price. Materials are quoted up front.

    Are you licensed and insured?

Central Jersey Home Services LLC is a registered New Jersey home improvement contractor, NJ HIC #13VH13918800, and carries general liability insurance.

    Which towns do you serve?

Princeton, West Windsor, Plainsboro, Lawrence Township, Montgomery, and Pennington, as well as South Brunswick, Cranbury, East Windsor, and Robbinsville.

Does a small repair need a permit?

Usually not. N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7 treats ordinary maintenance in one- and two-family homes, such as painting, small drywall or plaster patches, trim, and like-for-like fixture swaps, as work that needs no construction permit. Anything structural or any new plumbing or wiring does.

Do you do plumbing or electrical work?

Only like-for-like swaps: faucets, toilets, light fixtures, switches, outlets, and ceiling fans on fan-rated boxes. Nothing behind the wall, no new lines or circuits, no panels, gas, or water heaters.

Do you remodel kitchens or bathrooms?

No. We handle repairs and installs, not renovations.

Will I get a written contract?

Yes for any home improvement job over $500, as New Jersey law requires: signed, with dates, the total price, and our registration number. You may cancel within three business days of signing.

My house was built before 1978. Does that change anything?

It can. The EPA lead rule (40 CFR 745) requires lead-safe practices by a certified firm when work disturbs more than 6 square feet of paint in a room or 20 square feet outside. Tell us the year built and we will say which side of that line your job falls on.
